What is a cosmetic dentist?

Calling ones self a cosmetic dentist can mean many things.  It can simply mean I do cosmetic dentistry and have not had any advanced training.  It can mean that the dentist has sent some cases into an organization of cosmetic dentist, and now he can say that he is a cosmetic dentist because he now belongs to that organization.  You can have advanced training at an accredited dental school in a resident program or what is called a mini resident program.  The mini resident program means you have done advanced training at the dental school, and have treated patients there under supervision by the teaching staff.  The term mini is used because it is done on a periodic schedule of a few days a week spread out over several months.  A full residency means the dentist attends the dental school full time participating in the program.

To answer your questions about my cosmetic credentials I can state that I have done a mini cosmetic residency at the University of Texas Dental School in San Antonio in 1986.  This was a hands on program actually treating patients.  Since that time I have regularly attended accredited programs in advanced dental studies specifically oriented toward State of the Art Cosmetics.  The staff and I regular attend the Dawson Institute of Advanced Dental Studies and The Seatle Institute for Dental Education continuing our effort to provide the best possible dental care based on form, function, and esthetics
